Designing The Future

The Open Design Cape Town Festival will explore how creative approaches to problem solving and sustainable design can benefit South Africa.
And this year the Mother City’s most dynamic design and innovation festival will offer a programme packed with design and educational elements for learners, students, professionals and people from all walks of life.

Aurecon’s Design Thinking
Workshop for Engineers 

Book your seat for one of two design thinking workshops presented and hosted by Aurecon, one of the most prominent engineering companies in Africa. Workshops last three hours and take place on Wednesday 16 August at the Cape Town City Hall. The Aurecon Master Class: Design Thinking For Engineers workshop has 15 seats available for professional engineers. The Aurecon Master Class: Design Thinking For Student Engineers has space for 24 students. The workshops will share Aurecon’s Design Thinking philosophy, and show how how they ensure the work they do stays relevant, realistic and sustainable.

Universal Design 

On Wednesday 16 August, Universal Design Africa will be hosting a workshop for architects, interior designers and planners about how to make spaces accessible for all, including people with disabilities, or functional, cognitive and physical limitations. This CPD-accredited full day workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Universal Design, and show how designers can contribute to a far more human friendly, accessible world. From a day spent designing, building and coding your own robot, to a masterclass for engineers, and study opportunities at some of the world’s top tertiary design schools, Open Design has a full schedule of workshops and educational events for young and old.

Experience Workshops 

From Tues 15 Aug until Sat 19 Aug the Experience Workshop from Finland will use play to integrate various skills across different learning areas to spark innovation and entrepreneurial skills. Hosted by Kristóf Fenyvesi, founder of the Experience Workshop initiative and a researcher in STEAM education at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, the free workshops will give kids a chance to apply their skills in mathematics, science, technology, engineering, art and design in a fun environment. Kids will build giant domes with 4D frames, make soccer and basket balls using giant molecules, and even build and code their own robots. There are fifteen workshops in total for learners from grades 1-12 to choose from. A few seats are still available, so bookings are essential. To book and for more details click here.

Designing Careers 

On Tues 15 Aug the Designing Careersshowcase at the Cape Town City Hall will host more than 10 top tertiary design schools, including the Istituto Europeo di Design – which will represent 11 campuses from Brazil, Italy and Spain, the Greenside Design Centre from Johannesburg, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Vega School, the Cape Town Creative Academy, the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, and more. The daylong event is aimed at high school learners between Grade 9 and 12, and includes talks by iconic SA designers like furniture and product designer Haldane Martin and architect Luyanda Mpahlwa.
