Sun 13 2017 - Sat 19 2017 @ 10:00 - 17:00

About the event:

Afrikanist in Motion is a collaboration between Aurecon, the World Design Organisation, WhereIsMyTransport and a professional photographer to capture the uniquely Afrikan transport challenges that confront the majority of Afrikans.

About the event:
Afrikanist in Motion offer a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of public transport commuters, offering valuable insights to help inform better infrastructure design and transport planning to provide relevant solutions tailored to the Afrikan context.

The photographer:
When Cape Town-based community photographer, Yasser Booley, embarked on his public transport trip from Cape Town to Dar es Salaam, he hoped to inspire more people to travel the African continent.

“I wanted to show that it’s not only possible to use public transport to travel through southern Africa, but that it’s a wonderful way to meet people and identify potential opportunities that could connect us. This connection is key to appreciating Africa’s potential as a continent and not just disparate countries that happen to be on the same continent.”

The journey
“I travelled by train from Cape Town to Johannesburg on the Shosholoza Meyl, arriving on a Friday. I left for Bulawayo the following day and on arrival almost immediately got a bus to the Victoria Falls, where I spent an awe-inspiring two nights. From the majesty of the falls to the walk across the Zambezi river into Livingstone, I was completely captivated.

After spending two nights in Livingstone, I caught an overnight train to Lusaka. As the train pulled into the outskirts of the city, I realised that Lusaka is larger than Livingstone. Two days later I travelled by bus to Kapiri Mposhi, from where I caught a Tazara (Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority) train to Dar Es Salaam.

The Tazara train wound its way from one stop to the next, its tracks linking the people of Zambia and Tanzania. After two nights I arrived in Dar Es Salaam – where I spent two nights – before catching a morning ferry to Zanzibar.”
