About the event:
In a media-obsessed society, consumers receive constant messages in a pre-packaged format, surfacing a common mindset of what is acceptable, beautiful and expected. Young people, especially females, are more susceptible to these messages. But those same women have a right to speak out, speak up, and to tell their stories.
City Edge: Stories from the Unheard invites city dwellers from all walks of life to tell their stories in an open, non-judgemental space, where writing means creating pictures with words – in all its different forms. Using the documentary Miss Representation as a starting point for discussion, we will reveal untold stories, offering workshop participants a chance to write their own narrative, free from the media’s influence or control.
We recommend that you watch Miss Representation before the workshop. (Not compulsory.) See the event details here.
The City Edge: Stories from the Unheard workshop provides a platform for storytellers to make their voices heard. Novices and established writers alike are invited to create a compelling narrative that represents their community. In time, the writings could be extended into a collection of stories; or a collaboration with designers and other creatives to extend the works into a visual language.
