About the event:
Opening Night: 10 August: 17:00 – 21:00
Five South African companies. Five Dutch disruptive thinkers. Five challenges. Ten days. Visit Open Design and see how they #cocreateSA.
#cocreateSA is a platform for South African and Dutch counterparts to exchange ideas and innovations for a sustainable future. It stimulates collaboration between South Africa and the Netherlands based on the belief that if we work together, we can make a difference and co-create solutions for local challenges.
Cape Town is effectively establishing its reputation as the start-up hub on the African continent. The innovation scene is booming. A similar process is taking place in the Netherlands. Investments are being made in technology and innovation, and new initiatives in fields such as health, science, agriculture and logistics are lifting numerous businesses to the global market level.
South Africa and the Netherlands function as gateways to their respective continents and this project aims to connect these gateways, connecting Africa to Europe and vice versa. Our goal is to bring Dutch and South African entrepreneurs together and facilitate the co-creation of acceleration in businesses.
#cocreateSA is an initiative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa, capturing the true essence of modern foreign diplomacy: building relationships, putting the demand at the core of our discussions and focusing on long-term commitments and partnerships.

RetroEpic Software is a game development studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. It was founded in 2007 by brothers, Keith and Niki Boshoff. The Boshoffs had always wanted to create games ever since they figured out that they could get into the source of their old ZX Spectrum games (the old cassette tape loaded games written in Microsoft Basic) and made that dream a reality. Over the years, RetroEpic has had the privilege of working with a number of key partners all over South Africa, as well as internationally, to produce great games for clients including Sharkie, which has over 100 000 downloads on Google Play alone, and Jungle Beat, which reached the number one spot on iTunes South Africa’s top paid games in its first week of sales. Working on client projects has allowed the company to continue to grow to a team of 13 full time employees as well as produce its own titles. Starting out with various Flash game titles, RetroEpic produced its first commercial PC title - A Day in the Woods - for release in 2011. A Day in the Woods was re-released after a massive art update in 2015 on iTunes and Android, and went on to win the Unsung Heroes competition and publishing contract with Spil Games.
