About the event:
What happens when 25 design innovation scholars from around the world combine inter-disciplinary ideas and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) D-Lab technologies with African indigenous knowledge to solve challenges of six rural villages in Botswana? The opportunity for radical innovation to alter the axis of the future is created.
In this session, we hear first-hand the results from one of the participants at the International Design Development Summit (IDDS) hosted by MIT D’Lab with the University of Botswana in the village of D’Kar during August 2015. The session will provide case studies of the approaches, insights and learnings of three selected projects over the two-week experiential learning lab. African design futurist Merle O’Brien presents case studies of the approaches, insights and learnings of three selected projects over the two-week experiential learning lab.
Merle O'Brien is one of Africa's few qualified design futurists selected by MIT D-Lab to participate in IDDS D'Kar 2015. She heads foresight and innovation thought leadership at Lacuna Innovation, one of the world's leading Front-End Innovation firms with clients such as Porsche, British American Tobacco (BAT), Distell and Standard Bank. She holds a Masters of Philosophy in Future Studies from the University of Stellenbosch Business School. Merle is currently doing a PhD that explores the life science of creativity and the radical innovation that can change the future in sustainable ways. Her brainchild, Creation iLab serves as a testbed for these ideas. Merle was a juror for the 2015 International 'A' Design Awards, a curator for World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and in 2010 was named by the Mail & Guardian as one of the 100 Women shaping the future of education and science.
